GOLD album joins 5m sales club

ABBA have further underlined their position as musical legends, with their Gold album becoming only the third 5-million-seller in UK chart history. According to latest Official Charts Company sales data, the quartet’s Gold - Greatest Hits has passed the 5 million mark in the past week.

The achievement puts the album alongside Queen’s Greatest Hits and The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band as one of only three albums to reach such an elevated sales level.

ABBA founder / songwriter /musician / legend Bjorn Ulvaeus told OfficialCharts.com: "I can’t think of a club I’d rather join!”

Gold - Greatest Hits marks 20 years since its initial release this October, having racked up eight weeks at Number 1 since it was first released in 1992. ABBA are one of the all-time great singles artists, having racked up nine Number 1s and another 10 Top 10s in the UK’s Official Singles Chart, since their debut hit Waterloo in 1974.

Official Charts Company managing director Martin Talbot added, “This is another incredible record in a career of extraordinary achievements for ABBA, who are unquestionably one of British music fans’ all-time favourite acts. Over the past 20 years, one in every five households has bought a copy of Gold, which is a truly remarkable statistic.

“ABBA are true chart superstars here in the UK – and this latest record adds to their legendary status.”

ABBA’s landmark has been reached after Adele’s 21 broke into the all-time UK Official Albums Chart Top 5 for the first time last month, behind Oasis’s What’s The Story Morning Glory. The two albums are among a list of five other albums to have sold more than 4m copies in the UK, the others being Pink Floyd's The Dark Side Of The Moon, Dire Straits’ Brothers In Arms and Michael Jackson’s Thriller.

ABBA Gold is just 46,000 copies behind The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper's.

    "Abba's" new projects

Article in Swedish paper Dagens industri

The four members of pop group ABBA have joined forces when they sponsor a family in SOS Children's Villages register in the Central African Republic. "We thought it would be nice to have a house in the village," says Bjorn Ulvaeus to di.se.

Abba's members to build a family of ten orphans in Bossangoa, along with Polar Music and Union Songs. The house is part of the Children's Village Noisy and become exactly like the Pink House, which di.se building together with readers and companies . But with a different name - exactly as has been Abba-members are not agreed on yet.

"SOS Children's Villages has a very serious and long-term approach.

We were impressed by it and thought it would be nice to have a house in the village, "says Bjorn Ulvaeus.

Children's Village in Bossangoa is the second built in memory of Astrid Lindgren. This association attracted Abba members, and especially Bjorn Ulvaeus.

In 1965 he was young, promising artist choose which another Swedish celebrity he was photographed with a report in the weekly magazine Allers. He chose Astrid Lindgren, which by then had been a children's book writer for 20 years and just put out our in Noisy Village. It was the first time the two met, but far from the last.

"The combination of Astrid Lindgren and Abba abroad have a shimmer around him, I think. Doing something with Astrid Lindgren's survivors seemed like a good idea. "

It is not the first time "Abba" donate large sums to charity. In 1979 the group  donated future proceeds from the then highly current single, Chiquitita to UNICEF, in conjunction with a television appearance in the UN Building in New York.

According to Universal Music Publishing  Chiquitita so far generated about 30 million to UNICEF. And the money will continue to tick up to the organization.

Bjorn Ulvaeus: I've never been to Central African Republic, but the house to be built has inspired him to find out more about the country and in the future self visiting Children's Village.

"It will be difficult to get to all four ABBA members to go there at once. We have not talked about it, but it's something I want to do eventually. "

What is your philosophy about donating private money to charity? %u2028"You have to be convinced that the money really goes to what they should. That was what convinced us. This project will happen and it's real - and it's not a lot of middlemen who take away some of the capital along the way. "

"I have no real system without giving money now and then. But you have to believe it. I have even donated money to the Salvation Army, an atheist as I am, but it was a special man who convinced me of what the money would be used to ", says Bjorn Ulvaeus.

Benny and Mona attended an event at Filmhuset to remember the legandary actor Erland Josephson, who recently passed away.

Benny said that he has  good memories of Erland Josephson, he must have been the funniest man in Sweden!

Benny: 'Beams are gonna blind me'!!

    photo:RobertM68 (?)

    Björn say's no Money,Money,Money.

There may be no more 'money, money, money' in Sweden soon, as a former Abba member joins a push to make the country a completely cashless society.

In most Swedish cities, public buses don't accept cash; tickets are prepaid or purchased with a mobile phone text message.

'I can't see why we should be printing bank notes at all anymore,' says Bjoern Ulvaeus, former member of 1970's pop group ABBA, and a vocal proponent for a world without cash.

Three per cent is still too much if you ask Ulvaeus. A cashless society may seem like an odd cause for someone who made a fortune on 'Money, Money, Money' and other ABBA hits, but for Ulvaeus it's a matter of security.

After his son was robbed for the third time he started advocating a faster transition to a fully digital economy, if only to make life harder for thieves.

'If there were no cash, what would they do?' says Ulvaeus, 66.

Ring Ring - The story of the abba sound

Arlanda takes down the Benny Andersson - ABBA plate in the arrivals hall.

In connection to the argument about Slussen the musican and composer Benny Andersson declared that he doesn’t wanted he’s portrait to represent Stockholm on the Arlanda airport. DN called the communication manager of Arlanda, Jan Lindqvist, to hear what happened to the portrait.

So the portrait has been removed?

Yes, Benny Andersson contacted us and we removed it. After 21 years of discussions the local government of Stockholm has, as I understand it, in a democratic way made this decision about Slussen and Benny then no longer wanted to greet visitors welcome to the region and Sweden at an airport in Sigtuna. We respect it, of course, no one should be forced to have their portrait there against their will.

What will you now replace Abba with in the arriving hall?

So far we just have a genre picture, I think it’s a archipelago motif. We have agreements with everyone involved and it will take a couple of months to get a new one. We want to have people there who feels representative for the region, preferable artists and sportsmen. But we avoid politicians just because the person should be able to represent everyone, independent of opinion. We thought it was very nice to have Benny and Abba.
